In 1933, a group of young priests from Paris under the leadership of Fr. Rene Voillaume made their religious profession in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Montmatre, in Paris, as “Little Brothers of Jesus “. They went to the Sahara desert, in Algeria (North Africa) and lived in the oasis of El-Abiodh, close to a Muslim pilgrimage centre. For nearly 14 years, they took the rule of life written by Br. They understood that following Jesus of Nazareth meant sharing the harsh conditions of life of the working class and living a contemplative vocation in the ordinariness of work and daily relationships among people, in their own housing sites ,much the same way as Jesus did in Nazareth as a carpenter. Little Brothers of Jesus Today
Today there are about 300 brothers living in about 30 nationalities in 45 fraternities. Their situation of insertion vary:
In Japan, the brothers have a fraternity among a group of marginalized people called “Barakumin” who are specialized in the trade of animal skin.
In Korea, it is among the migrant workers.
In Philippines, it is in the middle of a slum.
